Sunday on site requirement: at least 2 Sundays per month.


JOB DESCRIPTION: The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Rockland County (UUCR), located in Pomona, NY, is seeking a part-time (10-12 hours/week, or 3-4 units/week) Director of Religious Education for 2019-2020 to begin in August 2019.


We believe the Religious Education program is a critical element to the cohesion and wholeness of our young people, families and the entire congregation.  From its inception, members from throughout the congregation have been deeply involved in this effort demonstrating our broad-based commitment to a strong RE program for the sake of our children and the congregation as a whole.


In coordination with the Board of Trustees, the RE Chair and committee members, and minister, the responsibilities of the Director of Religious Education would be as follows:

❖     Direction and oversight of the UUCR Religious Education curriculum; set mission and vision for the RE program;

❖     With RE Chair, Committee members and minister, identify annual RE themes and programs including selection, ordering and monitoring of curricula;

❖     Plan, prepare and manage application of curricula including: recruiting and training volunteers;

❖     Recommend and coordinate weekly class curricula for each age group segment of RE program;

❖     Work with the Religious Education Committee to evaluate and get feedback on our classes and other programs; plan for future programs;

❖     Manage weekly scheduling of volunteers and RE teachers including providing appropriate support; work with RE chair on meeting agenda; manage lesson plan coordination by teachers; solicit feedback; recognize and appreciate volunteer contributions.

❖    Provide administrative support for the RE program, including: maintaining records of Sunday attendance, RE registration, fees, class lists, and new/visiting families; determining classroom groupings; developing and maintaining the RE calendar.

❖    Attend  monthly meetings with RE Committee and minister; write monthly reports to the Board of Trustees,  RE Committee; write monthly newsletter columns and present an annual report to the congregation.

❖     Develop and present worship for children, 6-10 times per year.

❖     Pursue professional growth, including networking with district and local religious educators and LREDA (Liberal Religious Educators Association).

❖     Oversight of youth programs, such as OWL, Coming of Age; and of  Intergenerational services.

➢     Passion for nurturing youth and being an excellent role model.

➢     Paid or volunteer experience teaching religious experience (or similar programs)

➢     Experience executing youth programs with social action theme or positive outcome

➢     Strong organizational and project management skills;

➢     Ability to work independently and without supervision;

➢     Excellent communication skills; comfortable presenting to groups

➢     Technology-savvy including use of presentation tools

➢     Thorough understanding of Unitarian Universalism and its 7 principles.

➢     The desired candidate should have knowledge of a wide variety of Unitarian Universalist RE resources and curricula, including OWL training; or a willingness to get training at the expense of the congregation

➢     Comfortable reaching out to congregation to involve larger group

➢     Experience in working with volunteers.

➢     Committed to growth, both of the RE program and of self as an RE professional

            Knowledge of or willingness to train in family ministry and outreach skills



About the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Rockland County:

UUCR was founded in 1956, has approximately 70 adult members, and has been in its current facility since 1962. There are approximately 30 children registered in our RE programs, from nursery through youth. We have an active 9th through 12th grade youth group, and a proud tradition of a strong Coming of Age program. Religious Education has always been a central part of our vision. We have recently renovated classrooms, implemented monthly Children's Worship Services, developed a number of effective intergenerational services, and revitalized participation in district youth activities. Professional leadership allows us to sustain this service. UUCR is committed to fair compensation for its staff. Compensation will follow UUA guidelines for the Metro New York geographic area, will be commensurate with experience, and will include a budget for professional expenses.
